history of the highland loft

When we opened The Highland Loft in late 2019, we knew we had something special. We’re located on the top floors of a historic building in downtown Elgin that dates all the way back to the 1890s – originally built as the Ackemann Brothers Department Store. Over the years, it was home to a print shop for RR Donnelley, but when we found it, it had been sitting vacant for some time.

We saw the potential right away – the exposed brick, original maple floors, decorative high tin ceilings – it had that perfect mix of industrial character and vintage charm. We poured our hearts into transforming the 19,500 sq ft space into a one-of-a-kind venue, complete with bridal and groom suites, a prep kitchen, lounge areas, and space to host up to 600 guests.

Since then, The Highland Loft has become more than just an event venue. It’s a space where people come to celebrate some of the most important moments of their lives – weddings, fundraisers, holiday parties, and everything in between. We’re proud to have created a place that honors Elgin’s history while offering something fresh, stylish, and full of heart.
